Instructor Class Safety Guidelines

YAP Outdoor Safety Guidelines

At Yoga at the Park, we prioritize the safety and well-being of our instructors and participants. Teaching yoga in outdoor environments offers a unique experience but also comes with certain responsibilities and precautions. Please adhere to the following safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

1. Scout Your Location

  • Visit in Advance: Before hosting a class, visit the park or outdoor location to assess the area. Look for flat, even surfaces free from obstacles like rocks, roots, or uneven ground that could cause tripping.
  • Check for Hazards: Identify and remove potential hazards, such as broken glass, sharp objects, or unstable ground. Avoid areas near water bodies or steep slopes unless they are part of the designated space for yoga.
  • Restroom and Facilities Access: Ensure that restroom facilities are accessible nearby, especially for longer classes.

2. Weather Awareness

  • Monitor Weather Conditions: Check the weather forecast leading up to your class. Be mindful of extreme temperatures, rain, wind, or thunderstorms. If bad weather is predicted, have a backup plan or communicate with participants about rescheduling.
  • Wind Considerations: Avoid teaching in areas exposed to strong winds. Windy conditions can make it difficult for participants to hear instructions and maintain balance.
  • Sun Protection: Encourage participants to wear sunscreen, hats, or sunglasses, and choose a location with adequate shade, especially during midday classes.

3. Class Timing and Environment

  • Consider Temperature: Schedule classes during cooler parts of the day—early morning or late afternoon—to avoid peak sun exposure.
  • Lighting: If hosting an early morning or late evening class, ensure there is sufficient natural light. Consider bringing portable lighting for dusk or dawn sessions.
  • Noise Level: Choose a location that is relatively quiet and free from excessive noise, such as traffic or construction, to help create a peaceful environment.

4. Participant Safety

  • Participant Waivers: Ensure all participants sign a waiver before joining the class. This is mandatory to be covered under YAP's insurance policy.
  • Clear Communication: Begin each class by reminding participants to listen to their bodies and practice within their limits. Encourage the use of modifications and props as needed.
  • Maintain Visibility: Position yourself so that all participants can see and hear you clearly. Use a wireless microphone if necessary, especially for larger groups.

5. Emergency Preparedness

  • First Aid Kit: Carry a basic first aid kit with you to all classes. It should include band-aids, antiseptic wipes, a cold pack, and any other essentials you may need in case of minor injuries.
  • Know the Address: Be aware of the exact address or specific location within the park where you are teaching. This information is crucial if emergency services need to be contacted.
  • Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contacts for participants and know the location of the nearest hospital or urgent care center.

6. Wildlife and Insects

  • Avoid Wildlife Encounters: Choose locations that are less likely to have wildlife interruptions. Be cautious of areas known for snakes, bees, or other potentially dangerous animals.
  • Insect Protection: Advise participants to use insect repellent, and consider providing it at your classes. Avoid areas with standing water to minimize mosquito exposure.

7. Participant Comfort

  • Bring Extra Supplies: Carry extra yoga mats, water bottles, and towels for participants who may forget theirs. Consider bringing blankets or layers for cooler temperatures.
  • Hydration: Encourage participants to stay hydrated, especially in warmer weather. Provide information on the nearest water fountains or bring extra water.

8. Respect the Environment

  • Leave No Trace: Ensure that the location is left clean and undisturbed. Encourage participants to take all personal belongings and dispose of trash properly.
  • Sustainable Practices: Use eco-friendly products and encourage participants to do the same, such as reusable water bottles and mats made from sustainable materials.

9. Safety in Numbers

  • Class Size: Consider the size of your class and ensure it’s manageable for the space. For safety reasons, avoid teaching one-on-one classes with unfamiliar participants in remote or secluded areas.
  • Buddy System: Encourage participants to attend with a friend, especially for early morning or late evening classes. This can enhance safety and create a supportive community environment.

10. Stay Connected

  • Phone and Contact Information: Always have a fully charged phone with you. Save emergency contacts and have the phone numbers of participants on hand. If possible, share your location with a friend or family member before the class starts.
  • Communication Plan: Establish a clear communication plan with participants, especially in case of emergencies or sudden changes in weather conditions.
